Re: [ASC McLaren ] got my car!! a few q's...

Ok...

a) Smell of gas in the cockpit with top up...   check out the fuel injector lines for leaks.    I had to replace the lines on my 5.0 because of that.   With the engine running, raise the hood and visually follow the fuel line to each of the injectors.  Usually this trick works best after the engine has cooled down and is not at operating temperature.  The cooler engine cuts down on the gas evaporation time and allows for a better chance to visually spot the leak if it is there...

The other potential spot or weak point on a Mustang is the gas tank... they tend to rust out on the seal edges and on the top.  Normally you can id that problem by just going under the car and doing a visual inspection of the bottom of the fuel tank.   Sometimes the leak appears on the top of the tank where the fuel gauge float goes into the tank..  Either rust or a faulty gasket could be a culprit at that location.

Open up the 'gas door' on the side of the car and make sure that the rubber connection hose, that runs from the gas hatch to the pipe which leads to the gas tank is intact and properly sealed with the clamps.  Occassionally the rubber wears, gets cracked, etc which could lead to fumes in the engine compartment.

Last thing to check out would be the fuel line from the fuel pump to the engine.  Run the engine and then follow the fuel line from underneath the car.   If there is a leak, it should be noticable with the engine running and pumping fuel, under pressure, through the line.

An odd one about that low oil pressure... is that occassionally the pressure sending unit, located on the driver side of the engine block - near the front... is the culprit.   I have seen two scenarios that would give false low pressure readings from that unit.   One is the electrical snap connector that attached to the nipple, located on the most outer part of the pressure sending unit.   Take off the wire connector and gently sand the 'nipple' to ensure a clean metal to metal contact there.   Similarly try to sand the inner contacts of the wire that connects to that nipple.  Sometimes it is simply a problem of insufficient metal to metal contact from the sending unit.

While you are poking around there, also make sure that the pressure sending unit itself is firmly attached to the engine block.  Even a minute bit of slippage could result in a sufficient loss of pressure to give false readings on the pressure sending unit.   Give it a little extra turn just to ensure a snug fit.

Good luck... hopefully your problems are as simple as these potential fixes...

Subject: [ASC McLaren ] got my car!! a few q's...

So I picked up the car this weekend(!!!) VERY happy, everything seems
well with her; drove a total of 6 hrs. back to NY with no problems,
except one meachanical one - the rear main seal appears to be leaky,
and the oil pressure gauge always reads between the "A" or just below
the bottom white line - I remember I had this problem at one point on
my last Mustang, but I can't remember how I fixed it - any ideas,
andcould the rear main seal be the culprit?
Secondly, I occasionally smell fuel inside the car with the top up-
is this because it's a vert, or is there an underlying problem - mind
you, I got 22 mpg on the highway. I did notice one of the fuel
injectors and the area around it was wet, but I don't recall it
smelling like fuel, I'll have to double check.
And lastly, the motor that pulls the top shut in back is missing (who
has it- no one knows...) I might have a source that can get one for
$100, does anyone know of anything cheaper? And on the same note,
once the motor is in and functional, will the whole top fit SNUGLY on
the body (i.e., "seal")? Right now if you look from the inside
there's a space all the way around the edge - is that just the way
it's supposed to be?
Thanks for any and all the help guys - I really appreciate it, and
I'm incredibly proud to be part of the mcClaren family-
I've had people pull up to me at red lights and inspect5 the whole
car and give me a nod, smile , and a thumbs up, I've had cops pull up
next to me when I was double parked while I went in the store just to
tell me I had a "phat whip" and just take off, and I've seen people
stop in parking lots and just stare at it... and I've had it less
than 48 hours... it feels great, lemme tell you....
Again, thanks for the help-
Jeremy
