Re: [ASC McLaren ] got my car!! a few q's...

Hello Y'all!

While we are on this subject of open spaces where the top fits the surfaces of the car: Where can I find a new windshied gasket. I do need to replace mine all the way from the botton left to the bottom right as well as along the top of the windshield.

Thanks,

Ok.... I am still not getting a clear picture on this.   That fitment info I gave would cover that hatch area, whether it is up or down.

Now I am not sure, but I believe you are referring to the potential gaps that may occur between :
a) the ragtop and the top part of the driver and passenger window, or
b) the side of the ragtop and where it almost comes in contact with the body of the car, directly behind each of the driver and passenger windows, or
c) where the back of the ragtop comes in contact with the rear hatch cover....

For A and B, on my car, there is a gap that I could conceivably push my fingers through.  But it sufficiently overhangs the window so that water would be thrown out and beyond the window.   Similarly in the B position, there is also a bit of a gap that would permit me to put my fingers through.

In both the A & B scenario, I think this is normal for the way the McLaren ragtop was designed to fit on these cars.   And possibly with some age shrinkage it might even become a little more pronounced.

In the case of C, I think that is where the best 'sealing' of the ragtop occurs and there should be no light or 'space for putting fingers through.

I do not know if the rag on my McLaren is the original rag or a subsequent replacement unit.  I almost suspect that it is a replacement ragtop, simply due to the absolutely horrible manner in which the entire car was maintained.

So... what I am seeing may be typical of an aftermarket ragtop ( whose source of origin is unknown ).    But from what I gather, even within the various model years of Mc, there appears to be at least 2 official styles of genuine Mc ragtops ( not including the various colors or material - I am just referring here to the way the tops were cut and pieced together ).

At this point Sandy could probably step in and give us the official word on how many 'genuine' variations on the officially supplied McLaren ragtops there were altogether.

wow....thanks for taking the time Marq --unfrotunately.... I'm
referring to the fit when the top is up(!) it's tight around the
sides of the car - is this normal?? I'm sorry I wasn't clear and I
made you write all that but I really appreciate it... If you have any
ideas about my problem now (or if that's just the way it's supposed
to be), I'd appreciate it (again). Thanks alot Marq, you're the man-

should check how the hatch mechanism 'hold down' is bolted into
place.

of the hatch cover.  The first two are the ones located nearest to
the door pillars.  Those ones tend to give you back and forth
adjustments.   HINT :  Don't go too far back with your adjustments or
it will snare the trunk lid and be a 'b*tch' to open.    When
I 'accidentally' did that myself, I had to pop open the trunk in
order to unsnare the hatch piece.

down.   It is the mechanism that engages when you go to pop open the
hatch.   On my silly car there is just a wire leading to it.  I don't
know what it is suppose to look like on an untainted McLaren.   It
looks like a trunk latch mechanism - but we are not talking 'in the
trunk' here - this one is located where the hatch cover clicks
down.   This one can be adjusted to give up and down positioning to
the hatch cover.   It almost seems like this is the one you are
talking about for being able to slip fingers into the car's
compartment.

about the way the rag tog fits on to the hatch cover.   The
adjustments that I have been talking about all concern the hatch
cover that hides your rag top under it when it is down.

made the adjustments to my hatch cover was to get a 1/8th inch gap
along the sides of the car and across the back area of the hatch
cover where it lines up along side the trunk lid.
>
> To complete my adjustments I had to make adjustments also to the
way the trunk lid was put on.  The two hinge arms that hold the trunk
lid in place, each have two adjustment bolts on them.   By loosening
those bolts slightly you can draw the trunk lid closer to the hatch
cover or back it off.   Also, because of the way the trunk lid arms
are angled, it also affects the height that the trunk lid lines up
against the rear quarter fenders.

adjustments until you reach the best possible positioning of the
parts.   I was able to get a 1/8th inch fitment to the trunk lid and
the hatch cover.

physically removed all these parts during their attempts to rebuild
it ( or whatever they attempted to do ).  When they went to re-
install the parts they appeared to just slam the parts back together
with not much attention to the proper fitment.
