The "Super Sports" lowering spring kit #M-5300-C first became available from
Ford Motorsports starting in 1985. Therefore at the time that asc/McLaren
was developing the car, it is very likely the springs that were put on the
'84 production cars were of their own design or at least their own choosing
from whatever supplier they used.
Personally I believe that they are one in the same. Many of Ford Motorsports
items are off the shelf items that are repackaged as their own and it is
very possible that the spring set that asc/Mclaren "developed" for their car
in turn became the Ford Motorsport spring kit that became available in the
1985 & later catalog to every other Ford enthusiast to put on their own
Mustang or Capri.
As a side note, I purchased a Ford Motorsport kit for my '85 Cougar XR-7
years ago and after installation the front of the car sat about an inch
lower but the rear was sagging horribly as if I had loaded it with bags of
sand. The springs in the kit had tags with production spring codes on them,
I was working at the Ford dealership at the time and we looked up the
numbers in the system and found out that these lowering springs were nothing
more than production 4cyl. Mustang springs reboxed as a T-Bird/Cougar
lowering kit.
My point is that just because Ford Motorsport has a lowering kit out there
for a certain car doesn't necessarily mean it was engineered specifically
for that car, it could just be a combination of already existing products
that will happen to work for another application.
