If it was a fuel injected 5.0 then I would suspect a faulty injector.... I had one 'go bad' and the smell of gasoline vapors was quite wicked.
And you can usually only spot it with the engine running. I forgot exactly what it is that 'goes' on them, but I think it was some kind of o ring. The fuel spurts out on to the engine block... and evaporates rapidly because of the heat of the engine and manifold... so it leaves little evidence behind except the strong vapor smell. You need to have the engine running and a flashlight to spot it while it is occuring... in order to zero in on which one the fuel is spurting out of.
