Up until about 1989 you could special order your Ford in just about any
color you wanted, it wasn't something that was well known but it could be
done. I'm sure Sandy knew about it from working at a Ford dealer. By 1990
you could only order a special color if it was a fleet sales order of a
number (I think it had to be at least 5) of the same make of car, if you
wanted to order just a single car they would allow you to get it in primer
only, with the intention that you would have your dealer's own body shop
apply the color of your choice.
Since I don't work at the Ford dealer anymore I don't know what the current
rules are but I am 99% sure that they don't even offer the "primer" service
anymore, just the special order fleet paint service.
It was probably to dropped because 1) The hassle of doing a non-automated
service on a highly automated production line. 2) Lack of dealers taking
advantage of the special order paint service.
