Re: [ASC McLaren ] Re: keep or sell?

As a matter of fact: What did the  McL Mustangs sell for; i.e. base plus options?

With regard to resale, the Auction $s are instructive in that unless a 20 to 40 year old car is a real cherry (or a rarity) it would be difficult to get the initial cost recovered. Then too, one would need to consider the time value of the money, plus insurance, upkeep.....?

For my 2 cents, buying a car new should be just because you either need a lot of transportation or your ego needs it. The only way to get the value out of a car is just drive it to death - as soon as possible. Then, if you have to have (NEED!) the same car after 10 or 20 years, just find the guy that was keeping his "cherry" and buy it from him! Besides, how can you tell in advance what is going to be "wanted" in the future, or what technology is going to bring to the fore. Consider, the early Mustangs would go like scalded rats; by the mid to late 70's you had to tow a mustang a quarter of a mile. Look as the rascals in the last few years - toooo bad if you saved a 'stang II?

Now - OTOH - if your car needs you (as MCLs do) take care of it and do not worry about its worth to others; just what it is worth to you. OK?

Seriously, I came real close to buying one of the "last" 1975 Chevy Caprice convertibles. The thinking being that there were not going to be any more Convertibles, and surely it would aappreciate in value. Guess what?

I am glad that someone took really good care of my '88 McL for me until last April - when I bought it.  Now, I suppose that ultimately, I am caring for it for the next guy (I hope).

Vrooom, Vrooom!

Low mileage really nice ones are selling for 32% less than they cost
brand new.  I think that they will stay about there for quiet a
while. But that ain't bad!!!   Take 32% of the price of a mid series
Mercedes or BMW of ANY year since 1984  and it's selling for alot
less!!  A 2000 BMW that sold for $55,000, would it bring $37,000
today?  Hardly!  Now, what 1987 car is bringing 32% less today than
the owner paid for it brand new???  NONE!
Will it ever go UP in value ?  Probably, but it's too soon.
