The way they rated hp not only changed in '72, but new emission rules went into effect as well. Drops in compression ratios to lower NOx emission played as big of a part in the lower ratings as did the way they were rated. The base 302 in 1971 had 210hp/296tq and a 9.0:1 CR. For 72 the CR was dropped to 8.5 and was rated at 140hp/242tq... A 33% difference in HP and 19% difference in torque. Compare that to the 351CJ (not the Boss), which had the same 8.6 CR in both 71 and 72. The 71 351CJ had 280hp/345tq and in 72 248hp/290tq... 11% change in hp and 16% in torque. The lower compression ratios made a huge impact.

BTW, pre '73 (or thereabouts) engines were rated at gross horsepower, without
most engine accessories and open exhaust. Thereafter, engines were rated at
net horsepower, with all the accessories bolted on and full exhaust, resulting in
much lower power ratings for the same engines.
I vaguely remember the legendary Chevrolet LS6 454 rated at 450hp GROSS and
subsequently rated at ~365hp NET when the new rating system came into effect.

Hey Sandy, Whay's the difference in a 5.0 and a 302? My 82 has a
5.0....thought it was the first year they came back in Ford cars?
Have a 1969 Falcon Wagon... factory 302, automatic, came from factory
with 220 rated HP.....WHEN they came back in 82.....the BIV came from
factory with a 5.0HO with a whopping 157 rated HP! BOTH came stock
with 2V.......GO FIGURE!......the 69 has stock 10:1 flat top pistons
and the 82 I think has 8.5 comp.........
