sandy...it is your speedo cable...it is in fact triangular in shape...you cannot remove it from under the dash....you must...must pull the cluster...the remark about scratches is VERY true...but, there are only a few screws to remove the steering housing...do that!
 
and if ya wait a while driving it... it will/should go away :) bet yer glad to hear that :)
 
if it does not for some reason, replace it ...if just for your peace of mind and the hassle of doing it again next year or next after that!!
 
it is also bolted into the trans and it is "clipped" to a gear (at the trans end) which is the gear ya change when ya change yer rear gear ratio :) per colors :)
 
oh and when ya pull the trans end...have rags or a oil change bucket for the trans fluid that will try to escape...lol
