What you're hearing is a mixture of marketing
hyperbole and myth. Clear coat paint is just as
susceptible to UV damage as regular paint. In
addition, clear coat can have it's own problems, such
as compatibility with the base paint.
It's more likely they want to clear coat it simply
because:
A) They can charge extra for it.
B) They are familiar with it's mistake hiding nature.
Personally, I would stick with the paint Ford and
McLaren intended and skip the clear.
