seems almost silly to have to explain this to an adult, but here
goes... paint a piece of metal. drop it in gravel--chips scratches
will leave the color of the metal exposed. do the same thing again
but put 3-4 coats of a good clear coat and drop this panel. yes the
clear will scratch but your black paint will not...therefore
protecting the black paint from chippin or being scratched off and
exposing bare metal...simple
if your clearcoat doesn't have enough depth, put more on. for a show
quality paint job the coats of clear should be double the coats of
paint. now im talking high quality car show paint jobs that look
like a deeply polyurethaned coffee table.
