I've done this before, but I guess you missed it...So.....
During 1988, the powers that were did not wanna lay off workers, when
demand sluffed off. They also found that dealers - when they wnated
one - want it YESTERDAY. Daeler "A" drives past competitor Dealer B
"B"s lot and sees a "strange looking Mustang". He calls up & finds
out the who, what, and where and calls ASCMcLaren and now he want one
TOO!!! Like NOW! No time to place an order with FoMoCo and wait 5
weeks for it to be built, and a week to be be shipped and arrive at
Autry Avenue in Livonia and logged in and wait the 2 weeks for
conversion and then wait for shipment to his Hometown Motors! He
wants it NOW NOW NOW NOW !!!! (I worked for dealers, they are that
way...G_D forbid another dealer has something that they don't have).
Okay? That said, by keeping the lines moving, ascMcLaren built up a
storage yard of a fine selection of 1988 ascMcLarens. A deler could
call and have the car inside of 10 days.
PROBLEM TIME.
They apparently mis-judged and over built, doing exactly 99 cars.
The last of the cars (most VINs last 6 digits all start with either
266 or 279, were built late in the run (June, July, August,
September) and beginning with October, dealers refused to take them,
wanting instead the new 1989s. Therefore, ascMcLaren was left with
99 cars that nobody wanted.

ascMcLaren then "sold" them to Dick McQueston Ford of Northern
Michigan (Out of business, now). McQueston then took them across
boarder to Canada and sold them (for ascMcLaren - representing
ascMcLaren) at a loss. However, many other dealers from the USA went
there & bought them for much cheaper than when "new" from
ascMcLaren. I am told that these American-based dealers actually
paid $16,000 a piece fro them and brought them back into the USA and
sold them for the "normal" new-car price of $24,000, frequently
making $8,000 on each one.
I have found these (I refer to them as 266 & 279 cars) just about all
over! Especially on the East Coast of New Jersey/New York/
Ct./Mass./ and Pa. and Maryland as well as Ohio and of course,
Michigan.
Owners all (rightfully) swear that they bought it brandy new
from "XYZ FORD IN_______" {Fill in the blank} ... Unknowing the real
story, now told here...Some of the car were actually trucked TO Dick
McQueston and then trucked across the boarder to the auction, and
acutually sold right off the truck, and then trucked back into
America. Some were driven the entire trip back & forth, so it's not
unusual for an American to have bought one of these cars with 1,000
miles on it or so, or to have bought one with 35 miles on it! I do
have a VIN listing of all 99 of these.
