Pictures of my 1985 ASC McLaren Capri (PROJECT)

Post by TurboN8 »

Well last week i was driving down a country road in Newton Kansas and saw a capri in a field for sale. "cool a capri" i thought "don't see those too often." I didnt stop til i noticed the orange stripe though! I got up to it and noticed it said "McLaren" Now i was really interested! Long story short i bought it for $1000. It needs a lot of work, but runs, shifts, brakes, and handles excellent!! Here are several pictures of it! I pulled the carpet out last night and found the build sheet.... well what was left of it, LOL, not cool. Anyway my plan is to try to restore it, as much as my budget allows, to a good looking capri! God these cars were awesome new!! The radar still works, at least when you get my a supermarket or gas station LOL. Air horn is very sad sounding. Engine is not the original, has an Elelbrock performer and a Holley double pumper. A/C is not charged, needs heater core, needs radio, needs ground effects/paint, but its a start! Hope you guys can help me out when i need it. I know the parts aren't cheap. Anyone have some rims for sale?!? or ground effects? LOL!
Well my name is Nathan and i'll keep you guys updated on the car. I already have a HS kid who wants it for $1500, but I can't part with her yet! I am an ASE Master Tech by trade so she will be treated good while i have her! Here is some PICS!

Looks like it was a good buy.

I noticed that the radar detector is in a strange location. Usually it is under the dash on the passenger side.

I also dont understand what that thing is next to the valve cover.

COOL!

Are those Jensens 6" speakers?

I think what somebody did was replace the CORRECT Kenwood 6" speakers with some 6" Jensons and NOT hack at the rear interior quarter panels.

My car has the same round speaker cutouts in the back. These are MUCH SMALLER than the stock ford 5x7 cutouts. Replacement panels can NOT be found for these cars. These panels came PRE CUT from Ford with 5x7 openings for normal cars. ONLY the ascMcLaren cars got SPECIAL smaller rear speaker cutouts.

Ask Hank in FL for some CONVERTIBLE Kenwood 6" SQUARE speaker covers. He may have some. Then get some Kenwood flush mount rear 6" speakers. The original covers will FIT the NEW speakers like they were made for each other! Just don't get the 3 way speakers as the center tweater and midrange will interfere with the covers. I got the 2 way speakers and it all fits like stock.

Okay I have another speaker question for you guys.

In the back seat there are the 6" jensens and covers as shown in the pictures. THEN in the rear hatch there are 6" Pioneers that someone has installed. Did these cars come with speakers in the back seat AND the rear hatch?? Or has someone installed the ones in the rear hatch afterwards? Thanks!

Only in the hatch. None in the rear seat.

Thats what i thought because my SVO only had them in the hatch. I mean someone did a nice job putting them in, but i guess my panels are cut up. Oh well, i never leave anything stock either!

Seriously, whats that thing on next to the valve cover? Its freaking me out. I know my cars dont have it but I'm wondering if I should start checking periodically to see if they start growing it.

All i can think of is it is some type of aftermarket ford valve cover with a crazy breather on each side, but at this point, your guess is as good as mine!! Maybe its a flux capaciter!!

Funny thing is that those are the stock valve covers. It does actually look to be some kind of breather because the other side looks to have one too. Never seen anything like it. Weird...

The speedo definitely is aftermarket. I've seen one of those before on a regular mustang.

So the stock valve covers have the ribs like that huh? I just figured they were aftermarket, like the intake and carb. I knew the speedo was because Sandy said they all had 140's in them. I can't imagine needing a 165 speedo, but with 2.73's it sounds like a CHALLENGE TO ME.......

I dont know if they all came with 140mph speedos. Mine only has a 85 mph speedo...

Those valve covers were stock on any '82-'85 mustang/capri that had the 5.0 HO engine.

1985 Coupes & 1986 EuroCoupes got the 85 MPH speedo. 1986 Full Packaged Coupes got the 140.

I once saw the 140 listed as an option on the EuroCoupes, but never saw/heard of an example that had it........
