Paint and Badges

Post by mark@ddi »

I have seen references to dash plaques. My 85 Capri Convertible has no dash plaque. On the passenger side of the car behind the door is a "plate" that says something like.."design concept by Peter Muscat #157." Is this how mine is to be identified?

I am going to do some work on the paint this weekend. I then wondered if this is paint or is it clear coated? I had an 85 Vette once and the clear coat peeled and had a dull paint underneath. This looks like just paint.

I really want to get after it. It is original paint and still pretty good but I think I can work out some of the flaws but I sure don't want to ruin it if is a coating?

Thanks

1984 & 1985 Mercury Capri ascMcLaren Coupes had no numbered plaque anywhere.
1986 Mercury Capri ascMcLaren Coupes had a plaque on the dash, in front of the passenger side seat. They were numbered 001 to 115

1984, 85 & 86 Mercury Capri ascMcLaren 2-Seat 5.0 SC or 3.8 SC had theirs on the car's exterior, passenger side, beteween the door opening & the rear wheel cut-out opening, just 1.5 -inches above the top edge of the bodyside moulding, with "Design Concept By Peter Muscat" and its number.

1987-1990 Ford Mustang ascMcLarens had their number - again, back inside, in front of the passenger, on the padded part of the dash, saying
LIMITED EDITION 001

1987s were 001 - 479
1988s were 480 - 1494
1989s were 001 - 247
1990s were 248 - 300
1990 Silver Anniversary Editions were 1901-1912

Any plaque beginning with the number 16_ _ are ascMcLaren supplied REPLACEMENT plaques, requested by owners whose plaque fell off or otherwise got lost.

As of late, some plaques have turned up on pictured cars (mostly 1988s) beginning with 15_ _. I have no explanation for that.

I give here what was supplied to me, many years ago by one of the plant managers.

Grand Prix IV Editions, from ascMcLaren were not numbered (1985 Model Year) - nor were the EuroCoupe(s) from ascMcLaren, produced only for the 1986 model-year.
