Exited New Owner 85 ASC Mclaren Conv.
Hello all
I found this 85 mclaren on ebay the other night and started researching the car alittle and came across this sight. want to thank you all for all the great info i found. I won the auction and am really exited to pick it up and bring it home and start working on it. I seen that you all were comenting on the car, saying it was a little ruff. Well it is. Now i have a delema and want to here some feedback. I know trying to get the interior back to original is going to be hard and costly, but i hope some of my old friends can help (i use to work at the ASC plant on autry in Livionia). I have a 86 Lincoln mark VII with tan interior that runs and drive great but hit a deer and the front is smashed and not worth fixxing, thinking of useing it as a doner car for the drive train. I also own a 84 mustang conv. with a near perfect interior. the body and frame is shot. Thinking of useing that for a temp interior. I also have a 351w roller motor sitting on engine stand in garage looking for good home. Man it is going to be a great summer!!!
Thanks Again for all the GREAT info in these pages

I think your thoughts here are excellent. As for the interior, I'd stick with your doner car's interior idea as trying to get it all correct would be costly, and probably not worth it.

...it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.
How much can actually be used from an 86 Lincoln though? I would forget anything from that interior unless maybe the seats will swap over. Maybe the carpet will fit too if you're lucky.
I would go through the asc first and see what is workable. Door panels can be cleaned right up into nice shape if they aren't cut up. Regular Mustang/Capri door panels also can be found reasonably.
Plastic/vinyl panels can be refinished and if you do them right, they are very scratch resistant. If you have tan or blue interior, you can get very good interior parts very very cheap as many people don't like those colors.
Things that are going to hurt you are things you won't find in the Lincoln like weatherstripping or the toneau cover or convertible top/frame or center console. Everything else is easily sourced from Mustangs/Capris.
All dashes were painted from the factory anyways so another coating of paint won't hurt. You will be surprised at the results. I was very impressed with how my parts came out using the Metro Finishes paint with adhesion promotor and so forth.

Hey thanks for all the support. My Mclaren gets delivered tomarrow, Cant wait. I have a 84 muctang conv. for alot of the interior parts. The rustang unfortunatly has blue interior but SEM makea great interior paints and dyes. I use to have a 91 mustang cov. with red interior. I totally disassemble and redid it in saddle tan. It turned out great and about 7 years later it still looks great. I am using the lincoln basicly for the drive train and running gear. 5 lug 4 wheel disc brakes 5.0 ho efi and the eaod trans. I will go through the interior andtotally redo and reuse everything salvable. tomarrow night i will post some pics of her and the condition. I hope to hve her up and running in time for the Woodward Cruise. I haven't been down there in about 5 years. Planning on meeting up with an old elementary best friend to see his no matching 68 shelby gt 350. It should be a great time.
Welcome to the family!!! So how did it all work out? I love reading posts of new owners, so much enthusiasm, it reminds me of when I first got mine, I would have slept in the car if it was big enough, lol. What an awesome feeling getting something so special that you always wanted. Best of luck!dukkey wrote:Hey thanks for all the support. My Mclaren gets delivered tomarrow, Cant wait. Hi all
well my ride wass just dropped off. wow is this thing rough!!!. oh well it will be fun to restore and very gratifying. I don't think i will be driving to to the dream cruise this year, i will get stuck driving my buddies 68 Shelby ( that sucks). I will get some pics tonight and post them. Does anyone know a good place to get floor pans? Oh ya almost forgot serial number is 242. It is a 85 5.0sc originally red. It appears someone used it for a drag car, the frame work were the top bolts in has been cut out and there are round hole torched in the back frame and weld marks were it was welded to the trunk pan. but other than that it is in overall good condition for its age and use. Still very save able. Can't wait to drive it!!
