4 Seater Conversion?

Post by gwolf »

Hi, this may be a retarded question. I have been looking for a 5.0 mustang for a long time. I just found a 1987 mclaren with 55k on it. asking 7300. Would it be possible to put a 5.0 back seat in it and convert it to a 4 seater? Thanks.

Not really, but anything can be done. Because of the top there is no room. I have thought about doing the samething, so wife and kid could all go. But it would be cheaper and safer to just buy a Mustang conv.

I have seen a converted mclaren. He wedged convertible seats in the car. If you take out the storage tray you will see the seat belt bolts and the hooks for the bottom coushin i can't remember how he had the back coushin mounted in.

Are there no GT convertibles in your area?

I have now seen it.

I have also seen the 11th Commandment handed down by God.

Thou shall leave nothing stock, for stock haveth evil ways, and evil ways will bring on the menace of all good men, that have known the wrath of the feared AFTERMARKET Lords !! :livid:

To put it another way....turning an asc vert is something akin to blasphemy. The whole entire reason the car was created was to NOT be a car with a back seat. A 2 seater sport convertible.

While it wouldn't be the most horrific thing you could do, it would be like putting a v8 in an SVO or swapping a Mustang nose on a Capri

I picked up a pair of rear seat belts (out of a stang) Removed the package tray and bolted them into the stock bolt holes. I made a simple seat base from pressboard, 1" foam and some blue vynil. I lay the board on top of the package tray and belt the 8 & 10 year old in the back seat. Works well for short trips to the store. I tuck the seatbelts out of the way and it appears stock.

Exactly. Put aside a minute the destruction of an ASC...... The shear work it would take, I don't get. MUSTANG GT Verts are plenty! ANd its done.

You know, there's been some times that I could've used a pickup bed to haul some larger things that my McLaren just couldn't do. Has anyone done the pickup bed/ranchero ASC swap? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I am kinda surprised that whatever attachments and/or provisions there are underneath the rear seat area for seat belts, etc were not deleted by FoMoCo during the build. What else is hidden from our eyes, down in there ?

The attachments he's referring to are really integral to the body. They are all welded in by Fomoco when they create the body. To "remove" them would mean hacking away at the body, which is kind of silly if they aren't in your way.

For example when you bolt in the rear seat belt, its a big threaded deal welded solidly in place. FOMOCO probably didn't know what asc exactly was going to do so they didn't bother building things differently back there.

Thanks! Makes sence !

Regarding those two bins for storage where the rear seat had been....the plastic interior of those bins is (almost) paper-thin. Do not put anything heavy in there, as it will crack the plastic and if heavy enough, it can & will fall thru ! They are best suited for small & light items. A 6-pack of beer/soda *IS* too heavy !
Stuff like paper pad pens & pencils, cigars, business cards, smokes, magazine, sun glasses, medicine and the like is fine.

It would been great if they used thicker plastic, added a cooling unit to keep store bought ice and added external locks !

They would also need a drain plug for the water to drain out

When I was down at Paradise Auto (Henry's Place) in 2005, he showed me a 1986 ASC that I was also thinking of buying. I opened the storage compartments and saw a rubber drain fitting in each compartment that led through a hole drilled in the floorpan. Henry told me he sees a lot of that, a backwoods way to drain the melted ice.

Also, if you remove the access panel to get under the storage compartments, you can easily strengthen them. Not that I condone that sort of thing, mind you. I just see how it can be done.
