I was wondering how to get the vinyl part off of the tonneau cover?
It should be affixed to the cover with a liquid quick-dry type adhesive. Maybe even butyl tape. Poorly placed I might add. See if there are any places that are lifting already and start prying evenly as possible by hand to break it free. I did it in the summer so you might want to heat it up a little underneath. Be careful not to melt the vinyl. Oh and just so you know, the vinyl overlays a thin piece of press board type material so go easy and take your time. I reapplied mine with thick 3m tape and it holds just fine. Obviously you will need to clean the adhesive off as well. Mine chipped away with a semi-soft kitchen Spatula. Good luck!

A hair dryer will probably work very well.
Mine lifted up a little on 1 corner, I just pried it up a little, taped the paint, to prevent staining and reglued it with a tube of mastic that Henry Heisman gave me when I bought a mucket from him. Then I set a piece of foam, on a towel and rested a concrete block on it for a couple days. Still holding!

I understand how it is attached and that it's covered with vinyl. Mine seems to be cracked in half underneath but the vinyl in is intact. So is it a plastic formed piece glued to the painted cover? And there is a wood piece covering it? If so, it sounds like I might be able to repair it. Mine is also a bit wavey which seems to be the glue pattern. I'd like to know what I'm getting into before ripping into it.

Well I am assuming that all of the cars are the same when it comes to the cover. I am 99.8% positive that it was a piece of fabricated wood. I cant think of the type but if I had to compare it to something it would be that thin type of wood that you would find in a home garage that you would hang tools from, minus the little holes. That is how it looked and felt after I removed it. I am pretty sure that it was not fiberglass.

Scott,
Did your replacement match exactly to the old one or did you have to use the rubber filler pieces? I'm trying to figure out my options before I remove mine.

Per mark (03Mach1), the reproduction tonneau cover has a gap and does not go all the way up to the door lock area. It requires an extra rubber filler piece. Maybe this is a variation between the different model years. See this photo for the original one. the cut outs are different too.

My '90(s) both have it like the 2nd (or lower) picture. Azura Blue '90s is a very light pale blue, while the Silver Anniversary car's is light grey. From a distance they look the same in color, but from 7 feet away & closer one can see the color difference. As of yesterday, they were perfect. I suspect the lifting away and becoming loose take place over the cold months. The silver car is here in my UNheated garage, where it gets very cold from November thru March, the blue car is in 73 drgrees year 'round, indoors. The '86 Coupe is also in cold storage.
Indoor heated & securred storage is very costly in New Jersey, because property taxes are sky high. It averages $150 @ month, per car.
Cold storage is usually $75.00 @ month. During the Winter months my storage bill is $525.00 @ month & that is with 2 cars in cold storsge & 3 in heated storage. They eat up 45% of my Social Security Check, every month !

'Ya, but it's a really really safe, ultra clean place, and very very close to me!
Actually it's the garage that is right in back of mine. The back side of my garage is 7 feet from the coupe's garage. The 2 backs face each other. I didn't want all 3 Mclarens in the same spot, just in case of the UNthinkable.
