Did he ask you how you got his tele # ?? Did he recall me ? His car was the only actual car picture I used, all the rest were FoMoCo shots. I don't understand why in the 1983, 1982 & 1981 sales catalogs, all "Magics" "lightenings" and "Crimsons" have the "Cat Head" open fret decal on the front fenders, and many that I had seen in the past, on the streets likewise had it, yet, today it's like impossible to find a car with it. Seems like nobody on this site, except me, has any recollection of ever seeing such. Rufus's car lacks it too & I recall not wanting to use the photo, because of that, but his was the only one I could find, and even FoMoCo had no publicity shot of a Crimson Cat.

From people at FEP who have owned Crimson Cats, they will tell you that they never came with the cat head. The Fact Book picture I have does not show it either.

The Black Magic cars mention the cat head but it is dropped for the entry of the Crimson Cat. All the Black Magic cars (and white magic) cars I have seen have had the cat head.

The only other Crimson Cat shot that I found was at the newly reinstated www.mercurycapri.com:

http://www.mercurycapri.com/showroom/ads/83sf-0607.html

It has the wheels, stripes and no cat head. There are just SO FEW Capris in general that its almost impossible to note any build variances with any degree of certainty.

Good info Sandy! Thanks!

After talking with Rufus (very nice gentleman in his 70's), I was not that far off, his son Don is taking care of the sale of the car for him. Don lives in Ohio, the car is in Arkansas. Don was at the swap meet looking for parts for his 40 Ford.

Now about the car, It has 44000 miles on it and still has the original TRX tires, the battery and exhaust are the only things that have been replaced. There has never been any paint work to the car. Rufus stated there are some minor stone chips from a truck on the hood. The ASC kit was installed at the dealer. Rufus still has the window sticker, bill of sale , owners manual and receipts for anything that has been done to the car.

The car sounds like it would be a excellent addition to anyone's collection!

1983 Capri with the "Sports Package"

Post by grkjr »

I wasn't aware of this site until a couple of weeks ago. I own the black 1983 Capri L that was photographed in 2004 at the Woodward Dream Cruise. I bought the car brand new from Bob Dusseau L-M in June of 1983. The car was sitting in the showroom with the air dam, rear spoiler, and Marchal fog lights with ASC/McLaren labeled gray covers installed. Looking at the window sticker, the car was shipped first to Stu Evans L-M. Perhaps this is where the "Sports Package" was installed. After owning the car a couple of months I damaged the front spoiler. I was able to visit the plant on Autry and met a Mr. Horst Klaus and he was kind enough to give me a replacement front spoiler. I personally installed the replacement. It was a kit contained in a plastic bag. He told me there were either 100 or 300 cars made like mine. I installed the headlight covers made by Extang Corp in Ann Arbor, MI. I purchased the side skirts and rear valance from Hines Park L-M in Plymouth, MI in the mid-1980s. My brother installed the side skirts. I broke the rear valance before I could install it and bought another one from Paradise. The rear valance was installed by me in 2003. I've installed a Hurst shifter and had dual exhaust with Flowmasters in 1999 or 2000. My latest change was a replacement of the headliner last summer when it started to fall down. I found a set of '85 Cougar 15" aluminum wheels with Gatorbacks and replaced the TRX wheels and tires. The car now has just under 55K miles on the odometer.

Welcome, :D

I found it neat that you have headlight covers from Extang Corp in Ann Arbor, MI. Do you have a Smoked set also? I grew up in Ann Arbor and still have a set of clear and smoked covers. And Have never knew of anybody else having this type.
