Hi all - a friend of mine is considering buying an 86 white 5.0SC (recently on ebay). I have an 85 and I noticed some differences between the 2. I'm not sure if these are original or if it has been changed. Here are some things I noticed:
- Small buttons on top of front bumper near grill
- Pinstriping on sides
- Wood dash panels with several screws (screws not in my 85)
- Ford nameplate on engine intake (I think there is an asc one?)
- Steering wheel looks like Cougar (cruise, etc. - cat logo in middle)
- Rear speakers have square covers - original?
- Ford radio, not Kenwood
- Not sure about roof

I saw the ebay listing as well.
The buttons on the front bumper are normal and are on my 85. They are just more noticiable on white.
Pin striping was often a dealer installed item back. I have noticed a faint shadow of apin strip on my 85 trunk lid but not the rest of the car. My guess the trucnk lid got less prep work than the rest of the car when repainted.
Name plate on the engine? My 20K mile 88 has the Ford plate. I have seen the ASC one but never noticed one on a low mileage car. I would not expect a custom one to be out the first year but was surpirsed it was not on my 88. Either they were not very common or never installed until later is my guess.
Wood dash panls with screws. The NOS originals I purchased came with double sided tape. I could see how some might fall off during warranty. I see the screws used a lot but not sure if they were factory. As often as I see it, it might be factory. My 85 had screws holding the spray painted black wood trimon. I could tell it was not original as one of the screws went into the cluster lens.
Leather Cruise Steering wheel? I think this is one of those sporatic factory parts. Seems a few may have been installed (borrowed from Ford).
Speakers, not sure. Does not make sense without the radio.
Radio, very possble they just left the Ford unit in place or the Kenwood unit failed.
The roof looks ok with the seam running straight back from the glass top edge. Sandy always looked at the plastic windows to ID an original. Often the plastic windows would look out of place too high or too small or wrong shape. This one looks ok but maybe slighly too big on the window. Mine is covered up right now and wll check later.

In general there are a lot of inconsistanticies on these cars. We are the experts! there are no MCA judges for Capris. One mistake I made with my car was treating it like a Mustang show car. I can never show it at a Mustang show and there are few Fox body experts outside the MCA. Mercury car judging events? Right.
I would look over the rest of the car to ensure its all original. The little details questioned here are not really important on a custom built car verses a mass produced unit. Just my opinion.

My car has 23000 miles on it. 1986 Red Vert.
The intake has the ASC plate on it. I understand they are available from Henry but I've never checked. Not sure if they put them on at ASC or not. I checked they are available from Henry for $75.00 for 1986-90.
The dash is real Pecan and has small screws in it. They are very carefully placed at exact intervals. I think it came that way. Some did. It is very professionally done. They are hex head screws and the wood doesn't appear to be glued down at all on the spots I just tested. I'm thinking factory until they found a good glue or tape. Or quit to save money. The screws on the white one are the same as mine and in the same places.
The Capri steering wheel is because the Cruise Control was ordered. Cars with the ASC steering wheel don't have cruise.

The white Recaro seats are unusual but likely original. Wear seems about right for the miles. Looks like the seat belt recall was done.

HI, Just to add a bit of info, as best I know. The speakers and radio are the same that my '86 vert came with. As for the ASC name plate on the intake, that's a Henry item . The seats may have been redone. Reason, this is first vert I've seen - blue interior w/ white seats. Not to say I've seen them all. Just want to add, the seats have been out of the car. Check the pictures that show the underside of the car. Hold down bolts for the seat, threads are shiny no dirt on them . If your friend gets the car, it is a nice one . Thanks for letting me put my nose in this.

I have the twin to that car. Here the facts;
1) Buttons normal , I have the same ones on my 86 Capri 5.0L
2) Pinstripes have been added
3) Wood Dash When I purchased mine from the dealership that ordered
it. The wood grain on the dash was popping off . I could not get it to
glue down. So I ordered replacement from Hank and new dash bezels
and glued them down right.
4) The Intake cover has been added . I purchased one from Hank and
added it to my car. ASC did not offer these back in 1986
5) Steering wheel is correct from ASC. It has been wrapped with the leather.
My 1986 Capri 5.0L has the same Steering wheel with No leather.
6) Rear speakers correct
7) Radio correct The Ford AM/FM with Cass and premium set up was used
in 1986. No Kenwoods used.
Roof correct, But the latch is not locked in
