Engine Block VIN on ASC Coupes

New to the forum and a novice - but have been wanting to get an ASC Coupe for a while and thought I'd ask the experts for some advice. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I want an original engine car. I've been trying to figure out if the coupes (either '85 or '86) have a partial VIN stamped on the engine block to authenticate. I've been getting conflicting info. searching the web. Some are saying no VINs were stamped on these blocks - others saying its on the top back flat pad of engine (behind the intake manifold). Can anyone confirm they've seen a VIN stamped on the '85 or '86 ASC blocks and if so where?

All Fords had the partial VIN stamped on the block since 1967 or 1968 on all the v8s. I have never heard and thing different. I believe it was a Federal mandate.

That being said, reading the VIN is another thing. One should be at the top/rear of the block on the drvers side. I believe there is another one on the oil pan rail near the starter. I recently tried to to read the vin number on my 67 Mustang whch has a 74 motor (D4??) castng number. I can't see any numers.

The casting number cannot be newer than the block (part) year. Within 1 year that is, and can be carried over for several years.

Thanks a bunch for the reply. Sounds like folks are using the casting numbers to determine if they likely have an original engine car when they can't get to the vin. Like I said, I'm currently seeking a fairly original coupe and just want to know how to confirm it has the born-with engine when I find it.

The engine block one is hard to read. It is VERY VERY lightly stamped most times...as that rear pad on the block near the firewall is very hard metal.

The Transmission one is on the side if the transmission and runs vertically...that is easily read. That is alluminum and easier to stamp.

Also remember, the entire VIN is not stamped there...just the last part of it...can't remember how many digits.

The last eight of the VIN are stamped.

model year
assembly plant
consecutive unit number

For example...FF612345

1st F = 1985 model year
2nd F = Dearborn Assembly
612345 = 12,345th 1985 Mercury scheduled for production at Dearborn Assembly
