86 vs 84 roadster pull down question

Post by 86MclarenCapri »

I watched a video on YouTube that was forwarded from the Facebook group--it was an interview and walk around at a car show about an 84 roadster. When the owner shut the tonneau, he just shut it like a trunk--I thought you had to use the pull down motor to close the tonneau.

Or, is it different on an 84 than on an 86? Have I been doing it all wrong?

My '85 has a relay that occasionally sticks, so that when the tonneau is released, the pull-down motor cycles up and down until it collects the tonneau and pulls it down, shutting off the circuit. Most times it works normally.

Pull Down motor video

That may be my video I did for a member in Texas, My 86 ASC Convertible no longer has a relay box. Its set up direct and never fails or runs the battery down. Push up on the switch it will raise the pull down motor and release the tonn, cover all in one push . When its time to lock the tonn cover down , I will raise the motor about an inch, latch the cover down. then push the button down to level out with the truck lid. Only two wires go to the pull down motor. which the switch will reverse the power. Its quicker and faster..

I'm wondering if maybe I'm having the same fuse issues...

Last night, I started to put the top up as usual, I had the tonneau up a few inches, I inserted the hook into the hole and then pushed the tonneau down but this time, I pushed it a little harder than usual and the motor drew it down on it's own!? I used to have to hold it down and push the bottom of the button to draw it down. Even then, the motor would push the catch up until it caught the hook, then it would pull it down.

Also, when I jiggled the wires near the top motor, the green box clicked. I'm wondering if I may have a short somewhere in the wiring.

I do have a battery drain problem. It would take a few days before to drain the battery, but recently, it will drain over night. :x
