Air Horn Location

Post by 02z06 »

Does anyone have a picture of the correct location for the air horns and compressor on an '86 Coupe? And secondly, would the original horns still be installed or would ASC have removed them? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Someone, years ago, here said that the original disconnected OEM horns were still down there, in his car. (I have not seen them, in my 1986.

The 87 I just looked at had the oem horn under the drivers fender still in place, and the air horns behind the front bumper on the drivers side.

Air horns location

Post by capri50asc »

Hi Guys

My 86. vert is up on my lift so I have a picture of how the Air horns are mounted. The original horns are also both still there and have been disconnected and wires are both just hanging. The air horns are mounted in the front bumper on the passengers side of the car. Both are pointing down with the air lines going up to apron near the shock tower. I can not get a picture of the pump because the car is up with a car underneath it.

Thanks for posting that, that's pretty close. I'm going to do some more looking for tale-tale signs on this car and see if I can figure out where it might have been. It seems like there are some inconsistencies among where they put them, not unusual for coach-built cars I guess though.

Thanks for the replies, I'll check mine out when I get home and see if I can find some of these bolt holes!

Out of curiousity I checked my '88 and notice two horns on the driver side forward of the front fender. They look like stock horns but there are two of them? Does anyone know if the '88s have a special horn too or are these stock?

on my 85 coupe the horns and compressor are on the driver side. compressor in on the frame rail and the horns are up by the bumper.

it still had the factory horns (that i pluged back in after my compressor stoped working) there should be 2 inside the driver side fender.

My 2 1990s have the regular horns, from FORD.
My '86 Capri Coupe has the compressor down low, near
frame rails and actual horns on left side, sorta kinda 1/2 hidden under the top of the fender-line meeting the hood.

Ido not think that I have blowen the horn in the 1986 for at least 20 years.

I would guess that I have blowen them under 6 - 10 times. all in the 1st 3 years. 700 miles on her.

Factory horns: did the 89's come with airhorns?

Post by knsstang »

My factory horns have went bad. I need to replace them. Did 89 Asc's come with air horns? I don't see any evidence of there ever being air horns on this car. Are they hard to add?

Just read this post from Sandy

"The air horns were only on the 84 85 & 86 coupes. 'Verts did not get them. They were a part of the McLaren Pkg. on the Coupes."

Air horn

Post by svo413 »

Not sure when the air horn started or ended. The 85 Capri verts did come with them. Pretty sure the 86 verts did too.

As for Sandy’s comment, there were times when he was going thru his chemo treatments that some mid-comments were made. I suggest to go back to when he tried to summarize a particular build in the earlier days.

My wife’s 88 does not have one as we own the car from Mach03 in the comments listed above.

It’s not likely 2 horns went bad. The horn pads are known for going bad. It’s a simple fix. Time to get a volt meter out and check for power.

I unplugged one horn at a time, found that the "high pitch" horn was bad. I replaced them both with horns from a 99 GT. Now I'm good. I had already replaced the horn pad
