"Newbie" owner

We just bought a 1988 McLaren Mustang Convertible w/26,900 original miles (checked thru carfax). This is my husbands new toy. I've noticed that people refer to #car. How do we find out what # our car is?
VIN# is 1FABP40E7JF157360

We look forward to learning more about this neat car.

VIN 157360 was the 261st 1988 made, out of 1,015 Total for 1988. She is ascMcLaren Red, with Scarlet Interior and a Black Cambria Cloth Roof with Gold Wheels. She is one of 254 made in ascMcLaren Red for 1988. (ascMcLaren Red is Audi's "Laser Red" code H1H1 at Audi and Porsche's "Guards Red" Code POR 027 at Porsche.

The car was originally ordered by & sold by University Ford in San Diego, Calif. It was 1 of 7 1988s that University sold.

Thanks Sandy!!! I've been reading alot of threads on this forum and find it most informative. Having read about the plaque numbers, then we found the plaque on the glove box "Special Edition 795". There is so much we have to educate ourselves on and I'm finding it really interesting. We will need to buy a new top after the 1st of the year, and the windshield and outside windshield frame will need to be replaced. The windshield frame is cracked and the windshield is very pitted. Other than that it is in great shape. THANKS FOR THE INFO

The 1987 & 1988
"LIMITED EDITION ............... XXX
Dash Plaques, as we have all found out, were put on haphazardly - without any rhyme or reason. In 1989 & 1990 tey did follow a reasonably correct sequence. In 1988 & 1990 they did not start over at zero, as 1987 & 1988 were considered "Series I" and 1989 & 1990 were considered "Series II" ~ so .. these are the Dash plaques used:-

1987 = 001 thru 479 (as 479 were made)
1988 = 480 thru 1,494 ( as 1,015 were made)

1989 = 001 thru 247 (as 247 were made)
1990 = 248 thru 300 (as 53 were made)
1990 = 1,900 thru 1,911 (as 12 "Silver Anniversary Editions" were made.)

So, you take your # of 795 and subtract the number of 1987s that came before it (479) and your car's plaque would really be # 316...HAD they started over at 001.
Again, the plaques seldom line up with the actual number in rotation that it was. I have the master listing from ascMcLaren. Confused yet ?

Sandy - your wealth of information is amazing! So, the only confusion I have is do we refer to the number as 795 or 261 when we say we have an '88 ascMcLaren Mustang #???

Combine them:

We have the 261st 1988 ascMcLaren made, which was the 795th ascMcLaren TO be made !

Which was 1 of 254 made in ascMcLaren Red, FOR 1988 and one of 7 sold by University Ford.

How's that ? Could be worse. Consider the people whose Dash Plaque number is OVER 1,015 as in the 1988 owners ( 479 of them ) who have to say, " My 1988 is # 1466 of 1,015 made " !! (Or all 1990 owners! Theirs start with 248 and go to 300 and then 1,900 to 1,911 OUT OF 65 made !!
...and the 1989 & 1990 plaques are the ONLY ones that are actually in REAL order !! !!

looks nice, I've noticed the mustang asc's only come it two types, low mileage in good shape or trashed, wonder why. Welcome to the club by the way, this site is awesome for information on these cars, as you've no doubt seen.
