Warning this is a rant( Nothing too bad), please dont take offense if any of this is you. We are on here to keep these cars alive. Some people though just dont care. Just remember, if you take original parts off thats fine, please keep them for if you ever do sell the car.
Why does it seem like all the 87-90 asc's for sale on ebay or craigslist have the following issues--
1. tail light covers missing
2. Seats either trashed like someone was jumping on them or replaced with some crap 96 grey mustang seats ( No offense if you like the 96 seats)
3. Original door panels are missing and replaced with base lx door panels
4. Wheels--- geez did someone say pepboys special
5. Quote of" Car needs new top, they are cheap only $250.00) --Yea sure
6. original leather wheel, horn button and shift knob are gone, replaced with standard LX junk
7. Dash plaque missing
8. The following quote " I was going to restore, but need to sell".
{Yes you were going to restore it then you realized that you dont have the skill, dont care to take the time to learn the skill, dont have the money for all the crazy expensive and rare parts that are missing, because the guy you bought it off them took them off and sold them already. )
9. OOOOO the best one was on a California craigslist. " There is some rust under the rear tonneau cover. I work for a shop and they can fix it for $50 dollars."
( That rust is in a mclaren factory made part. I know restoration paint/body and it would be 1500 minimum to touch it.)
10. "This car has 10k original miles", Yea buddy, theres only 5 digits on the odometer, your not fooling anyone.

to answer some of the questions is pretty easy.
1 - tailights get bumped & cracked all the time. ASC covers are not available at the dealer or junkyards, so most owners who are not aware get the stock gt/lx as replacements.
2 - seats are leather. leather in cold weather hardens & cracks without constant care & then deteriate fast when used alot.
3 - the door panels were hand made & the qualtiy is not as good as stock, so they fall apart & are replaced with stock (see #1)
4 - wheel styles come & go, people want what they think looks good.
5 - tops on these cars are notorious for wearing out. hand assembled means it will fall apart quicker without serious care.
6 - leather steering wheel, shift knob wear out from use. again, when replacing, easier/cheaper to find stock replacments
7 - the glue will loosen over time & dash plaques fall off & are lost.
most people who bought these cars 2nd, 3rd, & 4th hand dont really know much about them, so dont take care of them & when replacing parts, dont know where or how to obtain original parts.

our cars are extremely delicate in many ways, IMHO.
Like someone else noted, all of the ASC specific parts are weak, and not well designed. and they are costly to replace. Thats simply why you see alot of LX and GT parts on these cars at "Joe's used car lot"...........
I knew of a couple different ownerships of ASCs where these cars were bought and given to 16 yr. old kids as birthday gifts (both instances, they were brand new! - yea, I know).......... can't imagine how many nationwide went this way............ this is probably one way many ended up in shambles. As the old saying goes, "driven hard and put away wet"......
Another is the lack of respect/notoreity these cars get. They are still often times unheard of by many.
And lastly, the prices these cars have been trading for the last 10-12 years, unfortunately invites/allows the JC Whitney subscribing populace to own these. (If these were trading for $20-25K, you'd see more that were/are better taken care of.)

Respect for the ASC line of Capris and Mustang
I feel that all the ASC cars are a work of art! When I look at the craftsmanship of how my 86 vert was made its just to cool. As for the parts
that ASC used. Some were pretty good and others have failed. But overall its a great car! Super performance, great handling, nice lines, easy to drive, parts are available and they are super rare! Give our cars about 10 more years and they will increase in value. But ask your self this. How many are still around? How many 84 -86 Coupes and verts are there? In most cases when a cars becomes 12-15 years about 90% have been wrecked, rusted out, Stolen, Worn out, or Stuffed in some garage or barn. ......How many exist?

The car being a performer was the doing of ford, not ASC. These cars are great to look at but sometimes the expense is hard to justify. I have been restoring mine for the last year and just in parts I have spent around $1500, and that's not including a top. The ASC parts I have gotten, either NOS or used are pretty cheaply made, honestly when I saw my NOS bumper extension and spoiler, I wanted to throw up. I still have a newly painted spoiler that 3/4 bolts pulled out of and it doesnt fit flat on the decklid, and the bumper extensions fiberglass had big inch long bubblesat the surface that had to be popped and filled before it could be painted. You spend $800 on these two parts and then spend more on labor to to make them right before you can install them. If you bought NOS Ford parts that didn't fit and had to be redone and had spent an absorbonent amount of money to aquire them, how would you feel? The tail light covers are insanely expensive seeing how they are only covers and honestly, how different are they from the cheese grater gts? The answer is just different enough to be ASC, but justify spending $500 on new covers for a car that you paid $3k for.
Don't get me wrong, the cars are beauties and I can't wait to have mine back on the road, but they have their share of issues, and restoring one of these money pits has to be an act of love because it sure does not make financial sense. That and right now any of the mid 80s cars are not considered classics, and I honestly don't know if they will ever have the nostalgia associated with the 60's. The answer to why these things are cut up/modified/non asc is pretty obvious, pull anything off the car that is ASC and tell me it was made to last, and I will show you someone who is fooling themselves. If your not ready to put alot of time/money/effort/and more money into keeping one uber stock, then go buy a GT. Want to buy one without the hassle of restoring it, then there are plenty of almost stock examples running around that can be had for a fair price.
