Heater core 86 convt - What a pain.

Post by 86MclarenCapri »

So, I am replacing the heater core in the Capri and I took my time labeling and bagging all the screws. When I got to the part where I could pull the dash away from the firewall, it was catching on something.

Turns out they WELDED the dash to the bracket on the hump?? It was two deliberate tacks on that bracket that is welded to the hump--right behind the radio.

Why would they do this?

Welds

I have not seen that issue. It might be due to the cowl shake causing things to come loose. Remember Ford built these with a roof on them and ASC took it off. Maybe ASC found problems later on. ASC did a lot of welding so two more tack welds we nothing to them since everything like the carpet was out.

That would be my immediate thought that Asc did it to reduce squeeking.

I figured it had something to do with rattling or squeeking. The plastic part of the dash hull is on top of that bracket and it is screwed to it, so it should be pretty tight. I think it is a case of no forethought on future maintenance.

I had to get my sawsall in there and cut the weld so I could get the dash away from the heater box!!

I'm not surprised either. These cars do rattle and squeak a lot. I'm sure it was just to stiffen up things a bit.

FYI the Capri squeaks a lot more than the Mustang. Might be age or design. Who knows.
