Single or double stage to repaint a 86 ASC Mclaren

Sandy as a/the leading used car expert Would you look down or price lower a 86 Mclaren if it were painted with a 2 stage clear coat paint vs OEM style single stage? Or would you judge them any differant?

Mike N. What did you do and use on your car?

And what are the thoughts of everyone else? and what have you done if or when you painted your cars?
I'm leaning towards 2 stage just because it's better and not much more expensive

For me it would depend on what my intentions for the car. If it was a daily driver, I'd use 2 stage, if it was a concourse restored car, I'd put it as it was sold from the dealer.

2 stage all the way baby.

Most body shops will laugh at you if you mention single stage paint....and the others will simply refuse your business.

Years ago my next door neighbor who was a professional body man thought it would be cool to try this new Dupont single stage stuff ont he 67 Cougar. He hadn't sprayed enamel in years but this stuff was new and we were doing a quicky fix-it-up so I could take it to college.

I'll never forget how he mixed it up and within 10 seconds of spraying it he was bitching like crazy. Aftarwards, he said he would NEVER touch that stuff again, it went on exactly like enamel, gummed up your skin, hair, equipment etc etc....

...and this guy would get people coming into the shop requesting him to touch up their Ferraris....so he was no slouch.

Either way a good quality paint job will raise the car's value. I think there is a higher chance that a 2 stage process will provide a better paint job and therefore a more valuable car. A crappy finish even with OEM paint isn't going to win you any awards. If you can supply an equally good finish then I guess it's your decision which one you want.

Yeah 2 stage base/clear is the way to go...Enamel is really really hard to work with...Now don't get me wrong...a black enamel car that's done right looks so good it looks wet...BUT.......

Exactly....BUT....how much effort and work and TALENT does that take to pull it off?

No, I would not look down on it. The only thing that we in "the business" look down on would be a total repaint of a car in a different color.

That's what I'm saying...even IF you can even find someone that does it...it's too much $$$...not worth it...

Thanks for the input was planing on a 2 stage. But the dozen or so cars I repainted only 4 were clear coated all came out very nice the rest were PPG delstar enamel and all looked great with lots of shine. Maybe I just have a talent with enamal but it is also quick and easy on the wallet.

After looking at car #111, an the great improvements you have made to the car, painting is not your only talent!

I was trying to find pics of your ASC, I looked in your album and saw you have a Ducati Monster too. What year is yours? I have an '00 900sie. Someday I will post pics, its completely customized with aluminum brush and carbon fiber.

When I finally get the 85 Flooded Vert, I will have it done in single stage. That's almost the only thing my body man uses.
BTW, I also have a Ducati Monster, 2003 1000sei.

My car is in the shop right now had a high performance starter put in, new valve cover gasket, then some bodywork and other miscelaneous things like 11lb pulley on s/c.

Can you post some pics of your Duc too? How do you like the newer motor? I love these bikes they remind me of a Stang very versatile with customizing.

I would post some pics, however, I laid it down 2 weeks ago and removed some things to asess the damage. I'm in the precess of ordering parts now.
I love the new motor, even tho they only use that motor on the S2RS this year. Had it on the dyno a couple of weeks ago and it pulled 84HP and 64 lb. ft. of torque and it's stock except for Ducati carbon cans. Roll into the throttle and it'll pull the front wheel (although I don't unless accidental) in the first three gears.

I'm jealous of you Monster riders. My little ol' 79 Suzuki GS550 is fun, but it's like riding a moped in comparison. My friend has a Monster. I'd like to get a modern "naked" sport bike, but I doubt I'll be able to afford a newer Monster , and it seems like people hang on to them because I haven't seen any used ones locally.
