Actually it doesn't sound too wierd at all. Back a few years ago when my ASC was broken into in Mississippi (they stole my aftermarket radar detector) the insurance eventually caved in to buy me a new one. The Mercedes dealer that installed the top said the '88 top was too loose! Believe me, I saw it! There was excess material in between the roof rails. They oredered a 89-90 top and it fit just fine. Go figure?
