With regard to disconnecting the battery: I have an '88 McL. Even with a new battery, or fully charged, with the car unstarted for about 10 days, the battery goes dead. So far I have been unable to identify just what is causing the charge to leak-off.
 
So I just disconnect the positive cable when I know I am not going to be running the car for a week or two. The car is kind-of in storage for the winter!
 
At Sandy's advise I do not let the car sit too long, so I reconnect the battery and  go start it up every couple of weeks. I drive it a few miles and put it back into the grarage.  Also, keep the gas tank full.
 
My question; does and '88 have a computer that is "messed" up by this frequent battery disconnect? I do not notice anything different,  but a worrysome local "car-nut" thinks this is causing damage to. or confusing the computer. What computer?
 
What's a mother to do?

Regarding the trunk, you are saying that the pull cable in the rear
cove's "hidden compartment" is missing?  If so, look in the glove box
to see it there's a button in there.  Lastly, disconnect the battery
(one cable will do) and then re-connect.  If a power trunk, it should
then Pop Open.  Good luck.
