I keep mine disconnected all of the time.  Botht the + and the -

However, I never use a tool.  I have very slightly spread the "U"
things and just slip them over the terminals.  They are quite secure,
but not "tight" ~ never have had any trouble.

The reason these cars go dead frequently without daily or semi-daily
running is because they have a hot-lead running all the time to the
top release motor.  They is a constant draw.  If taken to a dealer
and the do a search with a trouble light looking for ???  they will
ALWAYS tell you that you have a "short" because there is a constant
draw of current.  Then they go messing up your car, for good.  I have
connected & disconnected my convertible now for 13 years with
absolutely zero problems.  I stop doing this in May, as then I run it
& drive it once a week, around the block, or a little bit further, to
the tune of 150 miles between May and October 1st per year, so 5
months divided by 150 miles or about 30 miles per month, May thru
September.  Out once a week or like 7 miles per outing.
