HERE'S THE ANSWER
I contact Hank, who has seen far more ascMcLarens "in the flesh" than I have. (I don't recall ever seeing a 1984 - 50 made!!) But, here's Hank's reply that just came through to me:-
HISTORY OF THE PLAQUE
Sandy, Got your phone message last night, tried to call you but couldn't get through. Anyway to get to your question the 84 Convertibles had a genuine brass plaque on the right rear quarter of the car that said "Design Concept by Peter Muscat" with the limited edition "serial" # of the car engraved in it. They also had a thicker and slightly longer engraved brass plaque on the right side of the dash that said "Limited Edition" _ _ of 50. In 85 they used the same brass engraved plaque on the rear quarter with the serial (limited ed) # of the car but did not use the dash plaque. In 86 they again used the brass engraved plaque on the rear quarter but this time it said "serial 86 - _ _ _ _" . Also they began setting the plaque in a black plastic frame highlighted with a red painted border. At some point in 86 they switched to a plastic version of the brass plaque ( I guess the price of brass went to high!) but still retained the same information of the brass plaque but the information was silk- screened on a gold-metallic looking piece of plastic. In 87 they retained the same plastic frame with the gold plastic emblem saying "Design Concept by Peter Muscat" but with no reference to a serial #. This was the final design of the Muscat emblem and was used in 88 and most of 89 but at some point in 89 and into 90 there was no longer a Muscat emblem on the car because of some disagreement or falling out of the contract deal they had with Peter Muscat.
