Mike,
Even if the car was originally a clearcoat car, the charcoal trim was not,
at least it wasn't from the factory.
When I repainted my 1985 Cougar XR-7 a few years back (paint code 2M, Medium
Canyon Red Clearcoat Metallic), I distinctly remember the Charcoal colored
trim on the car was not a clearcoat paint like the main color of the car
was.
I would have a talk with your body man about this and try to convince him to
not clearcoat the trim.
I was very specific with my painter about the car coming back to me just
like it was from the factory, and at my insistence I had him apply the trim
paint on my Cougar as a non clearcoat just as it was originally and it came
out great, there is a nice satin sheen to it that looks correct.
I have seen a few restored Mustangs out there that in my opinion might have
had the trim clearcoated because it looked too "shiny" to me of course they
just might have not used the correct paint for the trim.
Tom please correct me on this if I am wrong about this.

Yeah, I will mention it. That is probably part of the confusion.
They are thinking to paint it in a basecoat lacquer and I need to
see if they'll do enamel or whatever it was from the Factory.
Do you know what type of paint (enamel or lacquer) that the factory
did the trim with?
Do they make a non basecoat/clearcoat lacquer based paint?
