Intersting article on the Mustang convertible conversions at Cars & Concepts. I have been to the C&C plant in Brighton, MI, and the ASC plant in Livonia, MI. In April of 1986, my Dad bought his 1985 ASC McLaren convertible new (a left-over model) from Tom Botzum L/M in Akron, Ohio. Later that summer, he brought the car up to Michigan to visit me. It happened to be the same weekend as a car show that used to be put on each summer by Cars & Concepts at their plant in Brighton.
My brother and I helped Dad clean up and detail the McLaren for the C&C show. The car really sparkled, and our Dad won First Place for "Late Model Open Sports". They used to award the trophies by having the winning cars drive through the final assembly area of the plant, where Dick Chrysler (head of C & C) would present the trophy. There was kind of a hush as Dad rolled down the line in the beautiful black ASC McLaren roadster. I overheard C&C people in the background whispering "...hey! That's not one of OURS, it's one of THEIRS!" (meaning an ASC conversion rather than a C&C). It was pretty entertaining to see the ASC car take a first at the C&C show.
