I also run a PHPBB forum board and there are two suggestions I would make :
First, go to my site at
One nice 'tweak' you can add to phpBB is the listing that appears at the top of my web site, that list the most recent 30 postings. This saves the user from having to go in and out of different forum areas and provides a quick synopsis of the 30 latest messages.
Second :
The other feature is something that you will see if you go to 'register' on my phpBB... As you proceed to register, the system will challenge you to enter a grapic code that is displayed to registrants. It serves to STOP robot registrations. Hackers and spammers have programs that automatically open accounts ( sometimes thousands of accounts ) that are used to :
a) flood the site with thousands of useless accounts, and
b) gain access to flood the web site with SPAM postings or nuisance postings.
By incorporating the 'anti-robot' verification you will greatly reduced these attempts to automatically flood your forums or cause trouble there.
Third :
Within the administrators configurations there is an option for you to also control flood postings. Set the 'time' for 'flood postings' to anywhere between 30 and 60 seconds. This prevents a spammer from pouring repeated messages into the site.
As one phpBB operator to another, you will find these three additions to be the most worthwhile and are fairly simple to add.

I wanted to post a message here because I wanted to hear any concerns from
people that may have refused to sign up because the don't like it. (I hope

One thing I am concerned with is the difference between the yahoo group and
the new site. The yahoo group would email out a message whenever somebody
posted...no matter what the topic was.
With the new board, people have to check it occasionally to see if there are
any new threads. IF somebody replies to a thread then everyone who has
posted to that thread gets an email (if you do not get an email, check your
profile, there is a setting for it).
See the difference?
Would it be better if EVERYONE gets notified ANYTIME someone posts to the
new board? I think traffic would be low enough to do it. In large boards
with thousands of posts a day its just not practical...
