nice ASC 1985 4sale

I agree. Not what I would call original. I may expect a few changes - exhaust, possibly gears (can't tell by looking), etc.

But different seats, wheels, steering wheel, different valve covers, different floor mats, different radio, etc. on and on and on ....

You can rebuilt that motor and still make it look original as long as you use factory valve covers, stock dual snorkel, etc.

The car still looks good and is not tastefully done bad, but I still wouldn't not use the word - 'original'....

At least it is clean - which is hard to say about most Fox mustangs and capris out there today....

I took the keys in today. The sakes Mgr. (Who I bought the vehicle thru) brought a bunch of the people out to look at my McLaren. He has a Saleen. Which looks exactly like a Mustang! Hell, it is a Mustang.

I don't think he's selling it as a factory original car, more claiming it as a legit McLaren. At the end of the day, it's just a foxbody. Do I recommend tearing apart a all original one, no. But if it's not stock anymoar, all bets are off. Y'all are prooly gona hate me when I start building mine...

Why would I hate you for doing such? I would not. In fact, you'd just be making mine more valuable than it is.

700 miles, Original window sticker still on car, all paperwork, all servicing work order paperwork, original ascMcLaren floor mats still in plastic.
AND original McLaren installed Alpine Stereo/Casette player! OEM tires as well.

But you've stated you'll never sell your car, so it has, effectively, no value. And, as cool as the ASC cars are*, in 100% OEM form, these cars will never have the value a 100% OEM foxbody Mustang coupe will have. My car is one of nine, prolly one of one; and no one cares. It's some oddball Capri with stickers and a body kit. My buddy's 47,000 mile all original '89 5.0 five speed coupe on the other hand is a highly desirable car.

*convertibles excluded, I think the 'verts are tacky, and typical '80s atrociousness.

Stew, I speak from experience that the vert's just don't sell easily, this is also echoed by one particular collector of these cars that sells them regularly. I was unable to see why as the convertibles have much more in work done to them, as in interior and the labor involved in the convertible.
as for the ASC coupes, I think the value is higher than an original mustang coupe however as you stated the interest or desireablilty is not with the ASC cars. They made far more mustangs than they did capri's, never mind ASC modified cars. This alone would make their value higher, unless I am missing something here

Few cars are worth anything as"investments"! I did not "invest" in my cars for security or profit. I bought them because they were neat and rare. I probably will never sell them. The way that the convertibles were made (by asc) is sadly lost on the unknowing. A fixture was designed to laser-off the 2-Dr. Sedan's roof. That fixture was crushed in 1991 or 1992, after standing unused for like 18 months. The 'Verts can never be duplicated. In addition, The McLaren convertibles are THE ONLY Mustangs / Capris to be products of another company (asc/McLaren) that were purposly prepaired for another company's conversion.
Not Saleen, nor any other after-market convertor...ONLY asc/McLaren.

The white coupes all had blue interior, all other interiors came down the line in exterior of black. Omitted from the build were:
Rear seat, rear cove area side 1/4 panels, rear package shelf, headliner, dome light, but rear seat carpeting was installed.The 2-Door coupes were built with T-Top doors, so that they would be frameless when the car became a convertible...
There was yet another fixture that actually bent the entire assembly of the "A" pillars AND the windshield rearward while in place, without cracking the glass.
Items NOT AVAILABLE on other 'Verts from FoMoCo were added, such as the Illuminated Entry System and the built-in (not added) optional alarm system.
But.......... Most of all, they LOOK FACTORY MADE, from the rear they are often confused with a 2-Seat Mercedes convertible, due to the identical roof style. They are neat, rare cars. Something different.

Thanks for the comments on the convertibles.

Since purchasing my 85 convertible I have enjoyed reading & participating on this forum during the past few months.

From a newcomers point of view, it seems that in some ways the coupe owners, (the performance branch of the ASC McLaren autos) are a much closer knit group than the convertible (roadster) owners.

I suppose this is not so unusual since the Fox Body Mustangs & Capris have been sought after much more for their performance capabilities than for their aesthetic appeal. The ASC Coupes certainly were often at the top of the heap in that field.
On the other hand:
(When most Americans think of roadster, the word Mustang or Capri does not generally enter their mind). I believe this leaves the ASC Convertible (roadster) almost without a category to really fit into in the auto world.

Fox Body Cars were, and are, hot items for those with the need for speed in their blood. Many have been hopped up, chopped up, & beat up, to a point of near un-recognition.
Since the ASC McLarens came out of, and are a part of this group, many of them have received the same treatment.
As someone on this site has said, these cars weren't often bought by granny to go shopping in"
I believe this connection has had a profound effect on the devaluation of these rare specialty cars. I feel that the coupes, but especially the roadsters are bringing far less than what specialty cars of their quality & rarity should bring.

Three of my New Year's resolutions are as follows:
1. To cheer on the sellers that are asking $10,000, $12,000, $15,000, or even more for their ASC Convertibles & Coupes. (Every time one sells for these amounts, all of ours become worth more!)
2. To assist ASC McLaren owners in any way I am able, to acquire parts & accessories at reasonable rates in the process of restoring their ASCs to as close to original as possible.
(As I have looked at the prices listed for parts etc. for these vehicles, I believe they are completely out of synch with the present sales value of these autos.)

3. To purchase those that are being offered for todays undervalued prices when possible & hold them as an investment for either myself or my kids and grandkids to resell in the future for a more suitable price.
(They certainly can't be a worse investment than stocks, bonds, annuities, or even real estate has been these past few years.)
If the members of this forum would mentally double the value of their ASCs today & refuse to sell them for less except in an emergency, within five years or less, we would all own vehicles that are worth many times what they are today.
Well hey guys, thanks for letting a relatively newcomer blow off a little steam. I guess I have cabin fever from all the snow & cold weather that prevents me from getting outside much.

If you can afford to buy, store, restore, and insurance on multiple vehicles...MORE POWER TO YA'.

I bet if you counted all the coin Sandy spends to keep his cars his, I'm certain it would be a tidy sum....The cost of OWNING....money never to be seen again, paying to property taxes down at the CAR CONDO.

If I had the space I would surely own 3 or 4 by now, and would be very unpopular with my neighbors.

Still love the window shopping, and would encourage any of my friends looking at older hot rods to consider one.

My costs are cheap, excluding my monthly rent at "Car-Condo".
My Insurance policy is cheap. I have the 3 McLarens and the Cadillac on the policy. Each averages out to $275.00 a year, or near $1,100 a year. Under one hundred a month. Car Condo is a different story - however, there simply insn't indoor, secure, heated storage in New Jersey !! Like looking for a diamond, in the sand, at the beach. Car-Condo is PACKED FULL this Winter. I mean, really.....

* All brick building, concrete ceilings & walls & floor
* Alarmed and hot wired to fire AND police
* Remote controlled entry/exit door, each renter gets a remote unit.
* 4-Miles from my house & outdoor parking for arrival car.
* Paved driveway and located in a secluded area.
* A bathroom if needed
* heated /air conditioned 365 @ year to 65 degrees.

There ARE rules !
NO:
Smoking, No Beer or booze
No motor-work, other than a battery jump
No "Hanging out" & No "Guests"

Cost: $ 150.00 A month, per car
I have 2 cars over there.
We are filled to capacity , this year. We have 10 vechiles in there.
There is a waiting list to get in, (I was told). No car is blocked. In any emergency, everyone CAN get their car out.

This past June, the owner gave us all a party, with wives/girlfriends IN THE GARAGE! Set up tables & chairs and we all brought either food or drink. We all got to socialize and talk "Cars". Everybody uncovered their cars, so we got to see what was under the covers. We had alot of fun.
Beer, booze, soda, pasta, hoagies, subs, cakes from a super bakery and the wives all got to meet and talk about how crazy WE are.
It *IS* a unique place.
