It's not a problem with lateral force. It's a problem with oiling.
Hydraulic lifters need oil to be "pressureized". A flat tappet
hydraulic lifter has oil holes much lower than a hyrdaulic roller
lifter. The roller lifter is taller, and the oiling hole is
higher...how it's getting pressurized with oil in a flat tappet block
would be a mystery to me.

I know Crane and a couple other companies do make retro-fit roller
lifters for roller cams, but they also need reduced base-circle cams.
I think someone makes a retro-fit lifter to use a regular roller cam as
well.
