Yes, Tom. For the 1986 model run, both FoMoCo and ascMcLaren revised
the ordering process, thereby allowing dealers or the public to
actually ORDER the cars. In 1984 & 1985 the Coupes had been what's
known in the business as "Pre-Spec" cars. Meaning the Zone Sales Rep
tells the dealer about the "program" {in this case the ascMcLaren
Coupe} and IF IF IF there is a color choice, he shares this info
with the dealers and they get the ability to say YES or NO and if YES
how many they want. This is how the 1984 & 1985 Coupes were made.
For 1986 model year, they opened it up for dealer/buyer ordering
ability, which resulted in the added choice for 4-Speed Automatic
Transmission, Power Door Locks & Hatch Release, Pop Up Manual Sun
Roof and (or) T-Tops ! The T-Top cars were a real NIGHTMARE! Since
Ford was under contract with (to) Cars & Concepts, Inc of Brighton,
Michigan - having ASC (American Sun Roof) install the T-Tops into a
McLaren would have been cause for ASC to see their lawyers, Ford Had
to first sendthe units to Cars & Concepts in Brighton, MI. for their
installation, and then PAY FOR C&C to send the cars over to Livonia,
MI to Autry Avenue locale for ascMcLaren to convert them into
ascMcLarens, and THEN BACK to Ford for Rail shipment to the railyard
for final trucking to the ordering dealer! About a 10 - 12 week wait
for the car.
Of the 115 Full Packaged made, 9 (NINE) were ordered with the
Automatic Transmssion (my car has this), and 86 with Power Door Locks
& Hatch Release, 20 with the Pop-Up manual Sun Roof and 8 T-Tops. My
car has the Power Locks - but I didn't want the known to be leaky T-
Tops nor the manual sun roof.
I have located 1 car with everything:
Auto, Pwr. Locks, T-Tops.
