Subject: Ragtop not covered by insurance if you lock your convertible's doors ? ? ?

Body:
I was reading in a security news list a rather odd little thing that I do not know whether the author was right or wrong.

On one hand they are enacting laws to force people to lock their car doors - to prevent petty thefts and car thefts.   BUT basically he stated that the insurance companies 'will not' replace a torn rag top on a car that had locked doors.   Apparently he alleges that in the US you must leave your doors unlocked or else you don't get money for a vandalized rag.   This is something that the rules for probably change from State to State.

Here is his exact quote   "... in the US. if you own a convertible, insurance companies require you to keep your doors unlocked, otherwise they will not cover the costs of repairing a ripped-open convertible soft-top. To think that the police would fine you if your car was unlocked is kinda ridiculous, for exactly the same
case as what do you do with a convertible? Or a Jeep, where you can even take the doors off?  "

Any thoughts from anyone who has some personal insight into this ?
