Guys, we have to talk about VINs. There is something that it seems
most of you do not understand regarding McLaren VINs.

Ford Motor Company shipped Capris & Mustangs by rail to Autry Avenue,
Livonia, Michigan, asc's plant at that location, that had a self
contained rail-yard. When the cars (Capri GS Hatchbacks with
optional V-8 and Mustang LX V-8 {or 3.8 Litre Six in 1986} 2-Door
Notchback Sedans) arrived, they were unloaded into a huge storage
arena. (Think shopping mall parking lot, with 360-degree fence
around it). Now, when the cars were up-loaded onto the rail cars, at
FoMoCo's Dearborn Assembly Plant,
they were not done so in consecutive order of VIN. When they were
down-loaded onto asc's property and parked, again they were not done
so in consecutive order of VINs. These cars sat outside until order
(s) were place for a unit or units. As needed, a porter would go
outside (often in pouring rain) to fetch a doner car. With Capri
cars to become convertibles, all he had to check was for interior
color & transmission type, as all else would be changed. With Capri
hatchbacks, again transmission type but since they were not
repainted, exterior color mattered. With Mustangs, again like Capri
converts, interior color & transmission type.
At NO POINT were VINs ever taken into consideration in the scheme of
things. A unit with a VIN of 608777 at Ford, could have been built
as an ascMcLaren 10 weeks AFTER a unit with a VIN of 602500. Every
ascMcLaren has two numbers. The ascMcLaren production number AND the
Ford Motor Company sequence of build number. Never do they
correspond with one & other. Therefore, regarding this disscussion
of stereo installation, the VIN has no bearing as to what stereo was
originally in there. When a change was made at asc, new present
stock was used up, prior to the replacement piece installed.
I have never seen a 1986 ascMclaren hatchback with the Kenwood stereo
unit. I have seen "a few" 1985s with the Alpine stereo unit, but
mostly the Kenwood. My guess is that the Alpine came on board at or
near the end of 1985 conversions. I'd say on an '85 either or would
be correct. Since 1985 coupes are not numbered, it's impossible to
ever tell in what order ascMcLaren actually did their alterations to
them.
By the way, 1986 EuroCoupes were made under a 58Y code, "Radio
Delete" and arrived at the ordering dealer with a hole in the dash
for a "something" installation. They didn't even have radio delete
plugs. This is why most EuroCoupe have a wide variety of different
stereos in them, depending upon whatever the selling dealer had on
his parts shelf at that moment !!
