Of course, if you're not going for absolute
originality the choice is still yours.

The original paint is enamel. All automotive paints
are either enamel or lacquer. This includes one coat
and base/clear systems. That gives you a total of four
paints to choose from in most colors. I prefer enamel
with a catalyst additive which cures the paint much
faster and gives a hard but flexible finish. It also
allows you to color sand and polish in just a few
days, as opposed to months with un-catalyzed enamel.
Lacquers dry almost immediatley, and modern lacquers
are very durable. They no longer tend to be brittle
and crack with age as in the past. I prefer enamel
because it "cures" and becomes impervious to most
chemicals. Lacquer only dries, there is no "cureing",
so it remains more susceptible to chemicals including
lacquer thinner.

You may want to ask them why. I suspect that it's
mostly due to the relative ease of getting both an
even distribution of metallic particles and a smooth
finish with the base/clear system. It can be done with
a single coat, it's just a lot more finicky (I have
the show trophies to prove it.)
BTW, you are absolutely correct about the basecoat not
holding up well without the clear. (I wonder if that's
where some of the myths concerning clearcoat come
from.) It also will not have the proper finish (or
"sheen"), it is meant only as a base for the clear.
Since that color is non-metallic I can't imagine why
they would refuse to use single coat paint on it.
As I said before, do your research and make your
choice. Remember, YOU are the customer and it's your
car long after it leaves the shop.
