Anythings possible I guess...If there is one thing on my car that
appears to be totally stock and that is the drive train with exhaust
system. All casting numbers and part numbers match and are
correctly dated for that car. If it was changed it was changed very
early on in its life. I can ask the guy who had it before me...that
will take it back to about 1991.

Were 1984 Coupes done this way? Could a few of the first 1985s gone
out unmodified?

I think my car was originally sold in Florida...as I have a car fax
registration entry for that state from around 1988 and the owner
before me purchsed the car from there.

Well, in either case, I better not let anyone look underneath the
car, because I'm probably not going to hassle putting it back
stock. :-)
