NOW - - I NEED HELP !!!

After helping so many - now I need some H*E*L*P !!!!!

Yesterday, Leap Year Day, I finally removed my 1985 ascMcLaren
Mercury Capri COUPE. I brought it home overnight & took it today,
3/1/'04, to the Ford Dealer that it has gone to since new, (they know
the car & respect it) for normal servicing. My problem is all the
way over (8 miles) I hear a whurling sound. Sticking head out window
I quickly realized that it is NOT coming from the wheels. When I go
fast, the whurling is fast, when I slow down it slows down too (the
wurling sound). When stopped for a traffic light it is not present.
I can to my own conclusion that it's the Speedo cable. I checked at
their parts dept. and it is available and the same was used from 1986
thru 1995. It's like $89.00 or so.
Now my question is this: The Tech says it's like 2 hours labor
($165.00) and much of the dash has to come apart, to install it. IS
THIS TRUE? Is there another way? Seems to me that years ago these
things could be changed from UNDER the dash without removal of the
dash. Tech also said when warm (~HOT~) weather comes, andwith some
on the road usage, she'll probably cure herself. Is this true?
Possible ?
Thanks in advance. (Mileage is 639 ~ getting up there!!)
