Would you please elaborate on this? How does clear
coat PAINT protect my PAINT from scratches, rock chips
and other damage? What am I missing here?

In my experience both types of paint jobs get those
blemishes. High quality one step paints can often be
color sanded and polished to get rid of such blemishes
(obviously depending on depth), but clearcoat finishes
usually don't have enough depth to the clear to do
this.

Sort of like chrome vs. polished rims. Chrome will
look good with minimal effort, but in the long run,
polished can be kept looking new almost indefinitley.

I believe some paint systems offer UV inhibitors both
in clear and pigmented paints.

Having painted cars using both, I can tell you that
painting pearls and metallics becomes much easier when
using a clearcoat. You can concentrate on even
dispersion with the color, and then concentrate on a
nice smooth layer with the clear.

Choose what you wish, but do your research and talk to
people that have painted and owned both. Also if
originality is a concern, I don't believe our coupes
originally came from Ford with clearcoat.
